Butterfly survey


Record a butterfly sighting from anywhere within the Sunshine Coast region.

Butterflies are more than beautiful visitors to your garden. They are essential to a healthy environment. They pollinate plants, and both adult butterflies and their caterpillars are food for many creatures like birds. Butterflies can also be an indicator of the health of the environment.

Join us in counting the Sunshine Coast’s butterflies. Butterflies are most active during the warmer months. Record your observation from anywhere within the Sunshine Coast region.

How

  1. Download the free BioCollect app from Google Play or App Store.
  2. Search for the Sunshine Coast’s Big Butterfly Count in Projects.
  3. Click the + symbol in the top right corner to add your record.
  4. Select your location via the map or add coordinates manually.
  5. Scroll through the images of butterflies and enter the number observed in the count field.
  6. Hit the orange submit button at the end of the list to contribute your record.

This app focuses on the 31 most common butterfly species found in the region. If you have observed a species not on this list, please take an image and record via the iNaturalist or the Butterflies Australia app (Android or iOS).
