The Red Passion Flower is a vine naturally found in moist coastal forests of Queensland and New South Wales. Although fast growing, it is easily manageable in the garden and ideal for screening or trellises. It has showy flowers that transition from white to red which are full of nectar and attract honeyeaters and other nectar feeders. It is the host plant for caterpillars of the Glasswing butterfly, Acraea andromacha
Description
This slender vine climbs with the aid of tendrils with dark green, tri-lobed leaves. The large white-red flowers form mainly in winter and spring although they can form throughout the year. The flowers are followed by oval green fruit around 5cm in diameter.
Growth requirements
The Red Passion Flower grows best in moist well-drained soil and in partially shaded areas. It requires regular watering in dry periods and protection from cold and drying winds.
