The Zig-zag vine is a climber with highly perfumed flowers and small edible fruit. The vine is wonderful for supporting butterflies in your garden and is host for caterpillars of a number of butterflies including the Four-barred Swordtail, Protographium leosthenes, Pale Triangle, Graphium eurypylus and the Eastern Dusk-flat, Chaetocneme beata.
Description
Zig-zag Vine leaves have a slight leathery texture and grow to between 6cm and 12cm long. The flowers have thick, fleshy, yellow to brown petals and smell like sweet bananas. The bright orange fruit is peanut shaped and grows to 3cm long. The stem is characterised by loops and bends which the vine forms as it climbs.
Growth requirements
The Zig-zag Vine grows best in well mulched soils with plenty of room to climb. The vine will only begin to climb once it is a few years old. Regular pruning will keep the vine to more of a shrubby form. Once established the vine will tolerate dry conditions.
