Kangaroo Grass, Themeda triandra

Versitile plant with attractive orange seed heads.

Kangaroo Grass is a widespread native grass. It is very versatile and looks great in mass plantings in the garden, especially when in seed. The grass has many uses in the garden including adding a structural and textural element to borders, stabilizing banks and as a hardy cover for dry sites. It is the host plant for caterpillars of the Common Brown Butterfly, Heteronympha merope and the familiar Evening Brown Butterfly, Melanitis leda.

Description

Kangaroo Grass is a tufted perennial up to 1m tall with individual tussocks up to 0.5 m across. The leaves are blue-green drying to a rusty orange colour. The tall slender seed heads form from spring to summer and provide a beautiful orange contrast to the green foliage.

Growth requirements

Kangaroo Grass is best suited to a well-drained, sunny position. It requires minimal maintenance and once established is resistant to drought.
