Blue Tongue, Melastoma malabathricum


Great all-rounder plant for wildlife‑friendly gardens.

An open shrub with large striking purple flowers popular with many insects including the blue-banded bee. Purple fruits attract a variety of birds. Host plant for caterpillars of the Coral jewel butterfly, Hypochrysops miskini.

Description

Open shrub 2–3 m spread. Lightly haired leaves with prominent veins on the underside. Showy purple 5 petalled flowers mainly in spring–summer but will flower throughout the year if conditions are good. Soft purple fruit follows.

Growth requirements

Prefers full sun to part shade and moist, well‑drained soils enriched with organic matter. Water during dry spells for best flowering. Light prune to keep shape.
