The Coffee Bush is a hardy open shrub with attractive pink – red fruit growing near rainforest margins. The Coffee Bush attracts both birds and butterflies to the garden. Birds enjoy feeding on the fruits and it is also the host plant for caterpillars of the Large Grass-yellow butterfly, Eurema hecabe.
Description
The Coffee Bush typically growing to about 3m in height. In some cases, taller plants may develop a single trunk, resembling a small tree. The leaves are oval-shaped and soft.
In spring, unusual small green flowers appear under the leaves, followed by numerous berries resembling coffee berries during summer and autumn. The fruit ripen to a pink – red colour, some will darken to black.
Growth requirements
The Coffee Bush is quite hardy and tolerates a wide variety of soils and growing conditions. It thrives best in partial shade but will tolerate sunny positions.
