Mat Rush, Lomandra sp.

Hardy, versatile grass.

A resilient, structural plant great for slopes, mass planting and erosion control. The dense clumps also provide shelter for small fauna. Lomandra species are host plants for the Brown ochre butterfly, Trapezites iacchus and the small fragrant flowers support native bees and other insects.

Description

There are a number of species of lomandra with varying size and density. In general, they are a clumping grass‑like perennial 30–100 cm depending on species. Long arching leaves; small fragrant cream to yellow flowers on branched spikes in spring.

Growth requirements

Thrives in full sun or part shade. Adapts to clay or sandy soils and coastal conditions. Very hardy and low‑maintenance; trim old leaves at the base if needed.
