Sword Grass, Gahnia aspera


Grass-like plant that is host to a number of species of butterfly.

Sword Grass also known as Large fruited saw sedge is a clumping grass-like plant found naturally in open forests. The sharp edge of the leaves gives this plant its common name. Sword Grass is a host plant for caterpillars of the Varied Sword-Grass Brown butterfly, Tisiphone Abeona rawnsleyi and several skipper butterflies. It also supports small mammals and lizards in the garden by providing shelter.


Description

Sword Grass grows to approximately 1 m in height. Its leaf blades are long and narrow with sharp rough edges. The plant produces attractive clusters of small red seeds from spring to summer.


Growth requirements

This hardy plant will grow in a variety of soils and conditions. It grows best in sunny positions but will also grow in semi-shade. Once established it is resilient to dry conditions.
